Climate Impact Partners and BGCI launch Save A Species program

Published 7 February 2024

Climate Impact Partners, a leading global carbon finance organization with more than 25 years’ experience in the voluntary carbon market, has partnered with Botanic Gardens Conservation International (BGCI), a global expert in plant conservation, to launch Save A Species, a biodiversity program enabling companies to protect the world’s threatened tree species.

Nearly a third of the world’s 58,000 tree species are at risk of extinction, with more than 500 species with fewer than 50 mature trees remaining – impacting thousands of tree-dependent flora and fauna. Save A Species creates solutions for companies to fund the recovery of some of the world’s most threatened tree species and the ecosystems they support. Each funded project works with local botanical experts and local communities to design and deliver a conservation action plan to increase the tree stock, plant new populations, and manage the trees into the future.

“Half the world’s GDP is dependent on nature, yet biodiversity loss is continuing at pace, placing extreme risks on communities, and to businesses,” said Rob Stevens, Director of Product Development at Climate Impact Partners. “Companies must invest in nature now to futureproof their organizations, and Save A Species delivers a solution with direct, immediate, and measurable impact. Increasingly our clients are considering biodiversity risks and climate risks as two sides of the same coin, so we are creating the options that align with all those corporate priorities.”

Global leaders see biodiversity loss as a top global risk in the next decade – endangering natural resources and their ability to continue doing business in the future. This has seen hundreds of organizations commit to making nature related disclosures under the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD) framework - Save A Species aligns with and can be integrated into this. Corporate investments into the program will support the recovery of threatened species on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN)’s Red List, falling under three specific categories: vulnerable, endangered, and critically endangered.

“We have a real opportunity here to save species from extinction,” said Kirsty Shaw, BGCI’s Head of Conservation Planning & Action. “Corporate funding is needed now more than ever to help address the biodiversity crisis. Via the Save A Species program we will direct funding to where it is most needed, by recovering populations of threatened tree species which are crucial to the survival of entire ecosystems, whilst bringing benefits to local communities.”
