European leader in digital transformation Sopra Steria has procured Green Gas Certificates for its UK gas consumption. As one of the first companies to do so, Sopra Steria continues to demonstrate leadership in climate action by addressing its emissions while supporting the transition to a low-carbon economy.
Sopra Steria has made a commitment to reducing its absolute greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from Scopes 1, 2 and 3 (business travel and off-site data centres) by 21% by 2025 from a 2015 base-year, and is encouraging suppliers and peers to work towards similar targets.
Siva Niranjan, Head of Environmental Sustainability for Sopra Steria Group, commented: “The decision to purchase green gas for our UK operations comes at an inflection point in our environmental programme. The Science Based Targets initiative has recently approved our ambitious emissions reduction targets, and we are pleased to continue to support innovative new schemes such as green gas to move ourselves closer to our goals.”
Green Gas Certificates, approved for CDP reporting, enable companies to address their Scope 1 emissions with renewable power from biomethane. With an estimated 20TWh of gas demand from businesses in the UK, the potential for this new product is significant.
“Companies like Sopra Steria, which set and meet significant environmental targets, are critical to drive the transformation to a low-carbon economy. As a global and rapidly growing IT services business and an early adopter of market-based solutions such as PowerPlusTM, I-RECs, the Water Benefit Standard, and now Green Gas Certificates, Sopra Steria is truly leading the way in decoupling emissions and business growth. We are delighted to deepen our partnership with Sopra Steria by introducing Green Gas Certificates to their portfolio in support of their environmental objectives,” said Oliver Crouch, Chief Product Officer at Natural Capital Partners.
