Santander UK plc has extended its approach to managing its operational environmental impacts and has launched an offset-inclusive environment strategy. This demonstrates the bank’s commitment to the ongoing effort to reduce its environmental impacts.
The first stage in the offset strategy has been to assess the environmental footprint of Santander’s Camden-based head office, Triton Square. The CarbonNeutral Company, one of the world’s leading providers of carbon reduction solutions, verified the emissions generated from the building’s energy and waste and calculated the impact at 9,520 CO2e per year.
By purchasing verified carbon credits, every tonne of CO2 emitted by the Triton Square building from 2010-12 has been matched by an equivalent CO2reduction in a carbon offset project in Brazil. As a result, Santander has achieved CarbonNeutral® certification for its London headquarters.
The project in Brazil features a group of small ceramic factory businesses who are changing the type of fuel they use for their kilns. The factories were previously using 4million litres of oil a year to produce their ceramic products. With the support of the carbon credit funding, Santander will help the group switch from using the environmentally unfriendly oil to renewable energy sources such as sawdust and sustainable wood.
The achievement of CarbonNeutral® certification for the head office will be used as a driver for Santander’s continuing carbon reduction programme. It is intended that further operational elements of the bank’s business will be offset during the 2010-12 three year period including other main office buildings, significant publications and major events such as the Annual Santander Convention.
Through the dedicated in-house resource Santander Global Facilities, the bank will continue to strive to reduce its environmental impact and reduce overall carbon emissions.
