Commitment to low carbon future demonstrated by net zero carbon footprint of UK headquarters

15th November 2010: World leading Water filter Company BRITA has announced that it has achieved CarbonNeutral® certification for its UK headquarters at Bicester including all related business travel.  After achieving reductions in office energy consumption, waste to landfill and business travel and increasing the amount of waste recycled, BRITA has now implemented an offset-inclusive strategy demonstrating commitment to the ongoing reduction of environmental impact.

CarbonNeutral® certification was achieved by monitoring greenhouse gas emissions using the Best Foot Forward system and working with The CarbonNeutral Company, one of the world’s leading providers of carbon reduction solutions, to verify and reduce BRITA’s carbon footprint to net zero.  The achievement of CarbonNeutral® certification will be used as a driver for BRITA’s continuing carbon reduction programme.  Through offsetting, every tonne of CO2 emitted by BRITA is matched by an equivalent amount saved by a project somewhere else in the world.  BRITA has selected a range of international renewable energy projects including the Beijin Hydro Power in China, which forms part of the OneNature Portfolio of emission reductions  projects.

“It is always good to see organisations such as Brita developing carbon management strategies which combine direct emission reduction activities with a carbon offset programme to meet a significant reduction target. Gaining CarbonNeutral® certification enables Brita to make a powerful statement about its leadership on the environment and commitment to responsibility around carbon,” says Rebecca Fay, Marketing Director of The CarbonNeutral Company.

BRITA is the only water filtration company to have a comprehensive recycling programme for exhausted filters and a purpose built recycling plant at its German
Headquarters.  Over recent years the recycling programme for domestic filter cartridges has been expanded in collaboration with major retail partners to provide over 1500 recycling points around the country where consumers can conveniently return used filter cartridges for recycling. In the first ten months of 2010 over one million cartridges have been returned for recycling.  Larger BRITA Professional filters which are used in the treatment of water in the vending and catering sector are also recycled.

David Banfield, Managing Director of BRITA Water Filter Systems commented “BRITA is committed to the development of a low carbon future;  the low carbon footprint of our products is further reduced by the  recycling programme, which has had an incredible response from consumers. We are extremely proud to have achieved CarbonNeutral® certification for the Bicester site, which represents an important stage in the ongoing development of BRITA’s carbon reduction programme.”
