Commercial sets the standard with BSI initiative

01 December 2011 |

Commercial Group has become the first business working with The CarbonNeutral Company to achieve carbon neutrality in accordance with BSI’s PAS 2060 standard – a standard that enables companies to prove both radical and consistent carbon reduction.

The PAS 2060 standard was developed by BSI in co-operation with the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC), The CarbonNeutral Company and organisations including M&S and the Co-operative Group. Launched in 2010, it provides a clear and credible framework for organisations to demonstrate their commitment to reducing their carbon footprint and supporting renewable energy, forestry and other projects to mitigate climate change.

To achieve PAS 2060 standards required Commercial to reduce internal emissions through energy efficiency measures and mitigate any remaining emissions through carbon offset projects that meet strict verification standards, providing essential finance to energy efficiency, methane capture and enable the transition to low carbon energy.

Commercial has been certified a CarbonNeutral® company since 2006 in accordance with the globally recognised CarbonNeutral Protocol and chose to further their certification to include PAS 2060 standards as part of its on-going commitment to sustainability. Having achieved carbon neutrality in accordance with PAS 2060 for its 2010 emissions, Commercial has committed to further energy efficiencies and offset projects for 2011 and the future. Recent figures show that the company has already cut its overall carbon emissions by 57% by reducing mileage, implementing energy efficient lighting, designing a low energy data centre, minimising business flights and increasing public transport use.

Simon Graham, Environmental Strategist at Commercial, said: “It has been a key ambition at Commercial to be both at the forefront of carbon reduction and to be able to communicate this as clearly as possible. Combining CarbonNeutral® status and PAS 2060 gives us the ability to do both and also to show that our reductions are meaningful. Gaining PAS 2060 was simpler than we expected and will help us to achieve our annual 10:10 target.”

Jonathan Shopley, MD of The CarbonNeutral Company, commented: “The Commercial Group is an inspirational company. It has proven that being CarbonNeutral® – now to PAS 2060’s exacting requirements – reduces emissions in absolute terms and delivers measurable top and bottom line benefits. Commercial’s approach shows how effectively offset-inclusive carbon management can be done.”
