Edinburgh Taxi Company shortlisted for Green Company of the Year award

21 March 2012 |

CarbonNeutral® company Central Taxis, Edinburgh’s largest black taxi company, has been shortlisted in the Green Company of the Year award category at the first ever Edinburgh Chamber of Commerce Business Awards.

Central Taxis has been shortlisted alongside Skanska, Vegware, Lothian Buses and Zonal Retail Data Systems.

Central Taxis has been recognised by The Edinburgh Chamber of Commerce Business Awards for actively seeking out opportunities to make its business more environmentally friendly and for making a real and dedicated effort into understanding the impacts its business has on the environment.

William Purnell, Chairman of Central Taxis, said: “We are delighted to have our business receive a shortlisting in the Edinburgh Chamber of Commerce Business Awards. The Edinburgh Chamber of Commerce is hugely respected within the business community and the awards are sure to be highly competitive. This independent, external recognition is testament to the environmental commitments which our business has made over the past twelve months. Our ultimate aim is to offer Edinburgh’s residents, workers and visitors with a greener form of taxi travel.”

Graham Birse, Director of Policy and Communications at Edinburgh Chamber of Commerce, commented: "Green credentials and sustainability are an essential element of any business strategy today. By reaching the shortlist, Central Taxis have demonstrated they are best in class."

The awards ceremony takes place at the Prestonfield House, Priestfield Road, Edinburgh on Thursday 29th March 2012.

Notes to Editors:

Central Taxis

Central Taxis was founded in 1968 when 33 like-minded Edinburgh cabbies got together to form Central Taxis Ltd. Over the past 40 years, Central has grown to become Edinburgh’s largest taxi company with over 420 black hackney cabs in its fleet.

Central Taxis was the first black taxi company in Scotland to be awarded CarbonNeutral® company certification and is now in the process of developing a comprehensive environmental management system to ISO 14001 Standard, which will form an integral part of its business strategy and operating methods.

Some of Central Taxi's green achievements:

  • Central has created a company green team, whose responsibility it is to champion green commitments and behaviours within the business.
  • Central Taxis offset 1,777 tonnes of CO2 in 2011.
  • Each new vehicle welcomed to the Central Taxis fleet is Euro 5 compliant. The average age of a Central Taxi vehicle is 4 years old.
  • The business has made a commitment to reducing the amount of paper used in its operations and now supplies over 40% of customers with online invoices, reducing paper consumption by 30,000 sheets per year. It has removed the use of carbon copy slips for the processing of account journeys, eliminating one million slips, twenty-three thousand A5 envelopes and over five thousand divider cards per year. The business now carries out invoice price checks electronically. This saves a further 26,000 sheets of paper annually. Unnecessary printers have been removed from various offices, reducing printouts and energy. Finally, Central has changed the frequency of its driver newsletter, which previously used approximately 27,000 sheets of paper annually from the production of a monthly newsletter. This has now been reduced to a bi-monthly newsletter.
  • As part of its CarbonNeutral® company certification process, Central conducted an independent business wide Greenhouse Gas (GHG) assessment, to measure the CO2 emissions associated with energy consumption, pre booked customer travel, employee business travel, company owned vehicles, employee commuting, third party deliveries and waste disposal.
  • The company ensures that its taxis do not travel unnecessary distances to pick-up passengers. This is achieved by using a unique dispatch system which dispatches bookings to the closest available vehicle in the location of the pick-up point. The company has also implemented a shared car policy for some of its contract customers. This allows the company to match passengers to available taxis and reduce the number of journeys taken by individual passengers.
  • The company has implemented a switch off / shut down campaign to encourage positive environmental behaviour amongst staff. The campaign encompasses environmental training and a variety of posters, stickers and other reminders displayed throughout the premises to encourage/remind staff to turn off lights, computers, heating etc when not in use.
