Swedish Braathens Regional Airlines Offsets All Flights

In conjunction with the launch of Environmental Class - air travel powered by biofuels – Braathens Regional Airlines (BRA) is reducing the emissions from all its flights to net zero, at no extra cost to its customers.

While the aviation industry debates how to address climate change, BRA is taking climate action right now by delivering important finance to wind power projects in Turkey and India, verified by the Gold Standard and Verified Carbon Standard (VCS).

Anna Soltorp, Head of Sustainability at BRA said: “Supporting renewable energy generation is a natural progression for BRA as we continue our work to stimulate biofuel production for our industry and enable our customers to choose lower carbon air travel. We have selected two wind power projects in regions with targets for renewable energy capacity, which are also experiencing growth in electricity demand and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.”

The carbon credits purchased by BRA provide the additional revenue needed to make the renewable wind projects financially viable. By displacing electricity drawn from fossil fuel plants, these projects reduce carbon emissions, improve local air quality and avoid solid waste generation associated with coal-fired power. In addition to delivering emissions reductions, the projects deliver a number of other sustainable development benefits, including job creation and improvements in infrastructure.

It is important for us that the projects are independently verified against third party standards to evidence their emissions reductions and environmental integrity,” says Anna Soltorp, who will visit the wind power plant in Turkey this spring. “We are pleased to be working with Natural Capital Partners, specialists in creating this type of solution for business, to ensure our programme is of the highest quality, and we look forward to offering carbon neutral flights to all customers.”
