UPS Broadens Availability of Carbon Offset Option

13 January 2011 |

January 2011 - Customers in Europe, Asia and the Americas now may select UPS carbon neutral offering as an option within the UPS WorldShip® shipping system

ATLANTA - UPS (NYSE:UPS) WorldShip customers have the option of paying a small fee to calculate and offset the carbon emissions associated with their shipments. UPS collects the fees and uses the funds for environmentally responsible projects around the world. UPS is matching the offset purchases up to $1 million, doubling the impact of participation.

“This product was developed in response to customer demand for environmentally responsible shipping options. Now UPS carbon neutral will be accessible to the majority of our customer base,” said Alan Gershenhorn, senior vice president of global sales and marketing.

WorldShip is a full-featured, Windows-based shipping software ideally suited to customers who ship five or more packages per day. With more than 550,000 installations worldwide, WorldShip is one of the most widely deployed transportation software applications in the world.

The calculation to measure the carbon (CO2) impact of the customers' shipments is based on current and historical operational data, including distance and transport mode and a comprehensive carbon inventory.

UPS's proprietary calculation methodology and processes are verified by Société Générale de Surveillance (SGS). Additionally, the carbon offset process is certified by The CarbonNeutral Company. The calculator is based on Greenhouse Gas Protocol, the most widely used international standard for carbon accounting and reporting.

UPS carbon neutral complements the company's sustainable business practices worldwide. These include operational efficiency, conservation initiatives and industry-leading innovations. UPS recently was named by Climate Counts as the leader in the consumer shipping category for the second consecutive year.
