VMware Moves Closer to 100% Renewables with US and EMEA

20 September 2017 |

Global leader in cloud infrastructure and business mobility VMware has committed to becoming carbon neutral and sourcing 100% renewable energy for its global operations by 2020. It has achieved a significant milestone by sourcing 100% renewable energy both in the US and in the Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA) region.

Saskia Feast, Vice President at Natural Capital Partners says: “Companies like VMware demonstrate leadership by committing to and achieving ambitious climate targets. We are pleased to be supporting VMware on its road to 2020 and look forward to continuing to bring value to the business through investments in renewable energy and carbon finance projects going forward.”

As a member of RE100, VMware is working towards sourcing electricity from renewable sources to power company operations around the world. Through a combination of on-site solar installations, a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) and investments in Energy Attribute Certificates (EACs), the company has already made significant progress towards that goal.

VMware has purchased Green-e Energy certified Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) to match electricity consumption in the US for the third consecutive year and has recently purchased Guarantees of Origin (GOs) and REGOs, which hold the additional EKOenergy label, in Europe. The Green-e Energy and EKOenergy standards provide an additional level of quality assurance to guarantee that the purchases generate positive impact.

VMware is harnessing the opportunity to share its story and encourage other companies to demonstrate demand for renewable energy. “We are proud to step up, take responsibility for our impact, and join other corporate leaders through voluntary action and sharing our experience,” says Nicola Acutt, Vice President of Sustainability Strategy at VMware. “Getting to 100% renewable energy is a bold and ambitious goal that inspires us to innovate and create new ways of doing business - to give back more than we take, and ultimately result in having a net positive impact on the world.”
