International REC Standard (I-REC): Red River Hydro

Displacing the fossil-fuel dependent power sector in Vietnam with renewable energy for 19,000 homes, and generating 70,000 I-RECs each year

This run-of-river hydropower project is located on a tributary of the Red River in Northern Vietnam. Commissioned in 2010, the purpose of this 18 MW capacity power plant is to generate clean, renewable electricity for the Vietnamese national grid, which is connected to the wider continental Asian grid. This is one example of a range of projects registered under the International REC Standard (I-REC) - the emerging tracking instrument for corporate Scope 2 reporting for electricity consumption outside North America and Europe. These certificates can be purchased by corporates looking to address Scope 2 emissions with a 100% renewable energy claim.

  • Energy Access: The project generates more than 70,000 MWh of electricity each year, providing a reliable, clean energy supply in the region. In the absence of a domestic Renewable Energy Certificate (REC) scheme in any of the Asian countries, this is the first project registered under I-REC Standard.
  • Job creation: A total of 27 staff are involved in the operation of the project, in addition to those that were employed during the construction phase.

Through clean energy generation, the project is delivering 50,000 tCO2e of emissions reductions every year.

This is the first project registered under I-REC standard in South East Asia.
