Natural climate solutions

Financing natural climate solutions reduces and removes carbon emissions, and conserves and restores biodiversity to ensure our planet thrives.

Natural climate solutions work

Nature-based solutions are considered among the most effective and efficient ways to address climate change. Research suggests they have the potential to provide one-third of the climate mitigation needed between now and 2030 in line with a 2oC warming scenario. Yet these solutions receive only three per cent of funding in comparison to other sectors of the economy, such as energy and transportation.

Protecting natural places, such as rainforests, prairies, and wetlands, carries other co-benefits along with climate change mitigation: the biodiversity in nature provides the ecosystem services we rely on for clean water, food and agriculture, community wellbeing, and economic prosperity.

Climate finance in the form of offsetting and project development provide opportunities for companies to take an active and immediate role in letting nature work.

Our portfolio of projects

Forest conservation (REDD+): Projects such as REDD+ sequester carbon in biomass and the soil while sustaining communities and biodiversity.

Improved forest management: Improved forest management could be applied to some two billion hectares of wood-production forest worldwide, an area twice the size of the United States.

Reforestation and afforestation: Planting trees could remove more than 100 billion tons of CO2 from the atmosphere by 2050, according to projections by Earth Innovation Institute.

Grassland conservation: According to Project Drawdown, grassland protection has the potential to withhold 3.35–4.25 gigatons of CO2e.

Mangrove conservation and restoration: Mangroves are estimated to store up to four times more carbon than rainforests, making them a highly effective natural climate solution.

Agricultural land management: Sustainable land management and regenerative agriculture will help to adapt to a changing climate, mitigate the impact of food production on the environment, and ensure food security for a growing and more affluent global population.

Blue carbon: Coastal and marine ecosystems, including seagrass and seaweed, store large quantities of carbon.

No two trees are the same

Natural climate solutions are effective at both avoiding and removing carbon emissions. By maintaining and protecting existing forests and natural ecosystems, we can prevent carbon from becoming a source of emissions. Planting new trees, meanwhile, draws down CO2 and is critical to reversing emissions that have already been released into the atmosphere. Each project is unique in the benefits it provides.

Delivering reforestation projects

Natural Capital Partners works with clients to deliver reforestation projects in locations which are important to their business: building supply chain resilience, engaging staff in tree planting and creating green community spaces.

  • In Ireland we are the first Approved Natural Capital Facilitator for the Irish government’s new collaboration with business to increase native woodland in the country—the Woodland Environmental Fund (WEF). Through OUR WORK WITH MICROSOFT to plant 130 hectares of native woodlands, the programme is making a significant contribution to the country’s goal of 2,700 hectares of new woodland by 2020.
  • In Kenya we support the resilience of smallholder farmers in the tea supply chain through a TREE PLANTING PROGRAMME which helps improve land productivity and delivers new sources of income.
  • In the Netherlands, a reforestation project near Microsoft’s data centre has enabled team members to participate in tree planting activities and contributed to the development of green spaces for local communities.
  • In the UK we deliver reforestation projects throughout England, Scotland and Wales in accordance with the Woodland Carbon Code.
